Things are shaking up in the 6th arrondissement, little by little. We recently heard that Sugarplum Cake Shop cofounder, Laurel Sanderson, had opened up her own place, 13-a Baker’s Dozen, not far from Saint Germain des Prés. Since I live not far from there, we gave it a try and didn’t regret it.
Hidden in a courtyard, not very far from Sciences-Po, this coffeeshop is not easy to find out. Once inside, we felt like at home thanks to Laurel’s warm chatting, I’ve rarely such a good-natured person in the Parisian hospitality industry.
What about the food? The carrot cake is slightly different to the one we had at Sugarplum, the texture being less dense and carrot’s flavor being more intense, a true hit. Then we went with the excellent brownie (more sticky than the French version), coming with a sort of butter cream cheese and nuts, we loved the whole sweet/salty feeling. Coffees are coming from the one and only Coutume Café and Laurel also carries Pimento, a spicy but very refreshing ginger beer.
But wait, 13-a Baker’s Dozen is not a mere coffeeshop serving delicious cakes: Laurel and her teammate make heartwarming and healthy dishes for lunch. We also overheard they were about to open up for brunch during week-end, hurrah! Don’t think twice next time you’re in the hood, stop by Treize.
