Let’s us show you our favorite cupcakes in New York, from Magnolia Bakery to the rising stars.
To tell you the truth, we’re not big fans of the aesthetic of cupcakes (come on, my five years old nephew could do that). Also, they usually don’t taste that much but the fact is you can’t miss cupcakes when you’re living in New York.
• BILLY’S BAKERY •
Going to Billy’s Bakery has become one of our rituals every time we’re passing by the Big Apple. We’re really big fans of the banana cake, not so much of the cookie sandwich.
Enough procrastination, what about the cupcake? It’s actually a solid contender: the cake is moist and quite flavorful (which is extraordinary for a cupcake). We went with the vanilla icing: it was made with buttercream, it was surprisingly light though.
• MAGNOLIA BAKERY •
Magnolia Bakery cupcake is the most famous, though it’s not the best in our opinion. It’s quite straightforward with the cream which covers most of the surface of the cake. We had the peanut butter and jelly cupcake at Magnolia: not bad but we were a bit disappointed about the flavors.
• PROHIBITION BAKERY •
Price: 3 cupcakes for $5
Cupcakes at Prohibition Bakery always incorporate a little extra something. Alcohol! Each and everyone of them is supposed to represent a specific cocktail. For those who’re not big fans of cocktails, they also have a beer flavored cupcake. Sometimes it works pretty well, like the White Russian, but sometimes it’s a clear fail. We’re sure it will impress your friends at every party nonetheless.
• BAKED BY MELISSA •
Price: 3 cupcakes for $3
Baked by Melissa cupcakes are probably the tiniest cupcakes in New York. The concept is not bad since we always have a hard time finishing standard size cupcakes after a good meal. And it allows you to try many different flavors? Speaking about the flavors, these are really interesting and we love the extra filling inside which gives a nice twist to the cake. The Cookie Dough is one of our favorites.
• SPRINKLES CUPCAKES •
Sprinkles Cupcakes are a real institution on the West Coast. And now, they’ve moved in New York as well, and we’re so grateful for that.
The size is quite something, it’s uber-generous to say the least. The icing at Sprinkles is one of our favorites ones. We had the lemon cupcake and we appreciated the final tangy note which gave a light twist to the cake.
• BROOKLYN CUPCAKE •
Let’s move out of Manhattan: Brooklyn Cupcake is probably the best value for money cupcake shop in the city. The only drawback is the location which is somewhat remote. But the flavors are intense and the cake has the perfect texture.
We had a try at the Oreo cupcake which beat our expectations as it wasn’t too heavy. Trust us, it’s one of the rare cupcakes we actually finished off during our big benchmark.
